Sixty logic grid cases for kids ages 8 to 12, and every one was checked by a program: the clues allow exactly one solution, and no clue is missing.
This book is for children ages 8 to 12 who like puzzles and numbers, and for the parent, grandparent or teacher looking for something on paper, not on a screen. It is for a child who works alone with a pencil, in the car, on a flight, over the summer break or at the kitchen table. Your child reads the numbered clues and marks the grid under them: a check mark for what is true, an X for what is not. A short lesson and a case solved step by step come before the first case, so a child can start from page one.
What's inside:
- Does every puzzle have enough clues? Yes. A program tried every possible answer for all 60 cases: the clues allow exactly one solution, every clue is needed, and the answer key is that solution.
- Will my child know how to start? Before Case 1 there is a short lesson on reading clues and marking the grid, a case solved step by step, and a page of words to know.
- Only logic grids? Only logic grids: 60 cases, one case per page, on large 8.5 x 11 inch pages.
- Does it get harder? Four chapters of 15 cases. Chapter 1: three friends, clues that say who has what. Chapter 2: four friends, clues that join two things. Chapter 3: four friends with three things each. Chapter 4: clues about who is older or goes to bed later, ending with five friends.
- Is there help before the answer? Each chapter ends with a "Stuck?" page of hints: ways of thinking for the cases of that chapter, not the answer to any one case.
- Where are the answers? At the back, in case order. Each solution gives the answer for each friend, then a few numbered steps that show one way to get there.
- Anything else? A case log to tick off each case solved and note if a hint was used, and a certificate to fill in at the end.
What this book is not. It is not a mixed activity book: there are no mazes, word searches or sudoku. The friends in the cases are invented, and there is no story running through the book. It is a puzzle book, not a test of intelligence.
For grown-ups: you may photocopy the case pages for the children in your home or for one classroom.
When a case gets hard, it is the puzzle, not the book. Open to Case 1 and start reading the clues.
